KR Designated as COSD in Ship & Marine Tech Fields
On July 21 the Korean Register of Shipping (KR) acquired designation of a COSD (Cooperating Organization for Standards Development) in ship and marine technology field from the Korean Agency for Technology and Standards (KATS) Ministry of Knowledge Economy.
Accordingly KR will develop and manage national industrial standards for 300 technologies in the ship and marine technology fields over the next three years including ships and marine technology (ISO/TC8) lifesaving and fire protection (ISO/TC8/SC1) marine environment protection (ISO/TC8/SC2) ship design (ISO/TC8/SC8) intermodal inland navigation and short-sea shipping (ISO/TC8/SC11) marine energy (IEC/TC114) and electrical installations of ships and mobile and fixed offshore units (IEC/TC18).
With the designation as momentum KR plans to take the lead in strengthening the standards capability of the domestic shipbuilding and marine industries with creation of standardization infrastructure enhancement of standardized technological power support for private standardization businesses cultivation of standards experts etc.
In addition KR also plans to respond actively to the development of international standards and related criteria by IMO (International Maritime Organization) and endeavor to preoccupy international standards so that a domestic key industry marine industry can develop further.
A related KR official said "With the designation of COSD this time KR is now able to respond rapidly to the development of standards and market demands. Therefore we expect to realize the advancement of national standards for reinforcement of our industrial competitiveness in overseas markets at an early date."
COSD is a private organization mandated by the government to assume development and management of national standards ?surveys of the standards development demand establishment of plans technical examination preparation of standards etc. except for government administrative measures such as deliberation and public notice of national standards.
