The first of a new ultra eco-design containership is set to be delivered and tested its fuel-efficiency.
The 1,700-teu Ornella will be delivered from Guangzhou Wenchong Shipyard at the end of the month and examined its capacity.
Its performance may change the attitude of charterers reluctant to pay a premium for eco-ships in the charter market.
Lars Petz of shipbroker Walther Moller & Co says the new vessel will save charterers the expense of several tonnes of fuel each day.
Saying, at a slow-steaming speed of 16 knots, the eco-vessels burn just 25 metric tonnes per day, which amounts to at least five tonnes of fuel per day less than older designs, or a saving of $3,500 per day in fuel costs alone at today’s bunker prices.
