[Ship Building] DSIC into Repair & Scrapping

DSIC into Repair & Scrapping

Dalian Shipbuilding Industry (DSIC) of China makes an attempt to leap from large-scale business restructuring.

DSIC announced that the construction of modernized ship repair and scrapping facilities, with investment of around CNY 3.2bn ($513m), is just to be completed and it already started sales activity.

The facilities are placed in Lingang Industrial zone, Chang Xing Dao, Dalian.

Around CNY 2.3bn has been put into ship repair facility and the rest into scrapping. The construction has come to the finish with around 90% of operation.

Amid depressed shipping market, a number of shipowners prefer ship repair/conversion and scrapping, rather than ordering newbuildings. Following recent trend, DSIC came to focus on ship repair and demolition business and reuse waste steel with domestic steel maker Angang Steel.

Meanwhile, the facility plans its first project to start from the end of this year, with aims to repair 86 ships of 50,000-300,000 dwt, converting three 300,000-dwt vessels and scrap around 760,000-ton vessels, in a year.
