Mitsui onboard test on HRS

Mitsui Engineering & Shipbuilding of Japan revealed that it has recently started on-board test for its Heat Recovery System (HRS) for medium-sized vessel.

The Turbo Hydraulic System (THS) transfers surplus energy from turbocharger into hydraulic pressure and assist rotation of engine.

Mitsui has started the on-board testing of the first system since October, having equipped to active handymax bulker.

It has been verified that THS improves fuel efficiency by 4% when tested with on-land engine.

The system can be retrofitted to newbuilding as well as active ships. Mitsui aims to sell it as early as 2013.
