Norway's West Drilling Products, a subsidiary of West Group, is developing a "Continuous Motion Rig (CMR)" that could speed up drilling work.
West Drilling Products is touting the rig as an innovative breakthrough.
It can facilitate fully automated and constant drilling operations by enabling drillpipe and casing to be fed continuously into the well with full circulation.
As for existing rigs, drilling has to be halted every 30 metres so that additional lengths of pipe can be attached to the drillstring.
West Drilling has secured NOK 40m in funding from Norway’s Research Council, as well as cash backing from Statoil, ConocoPhillips and Shell, for the $160m pilot project to develop the CMR.
