Sasebo retrofits first on Cape

Sasebo Heavy Industries of Japan has retrofitted the first ballast water treatment system (BWTS) on a capesize bulker.

Sasebo announced it made the adjustments to NYK's 203,000-dwt Shin Onoe (built 2004) and equipped a 92,000-cbm ballast tank and a filter.

An official from the shipbuilder said “It is one of the largest-scale BWTS retrofits ever to be done on existing vessels,”

Meanwhile, in preparation of increasing demand for retrofits, the Japanese shipyard had become a partner with Chengxi Shipyard and COSCO in China.
