A number of mega-containership newbuilding projects are now under way as boxship owners post improved performance in the third quarter.
Canadian shipowner Seaspan is to order more 10,000TEU ships, while Taiwan's Yang Ming Marine Transport and Chile’s CSAV are proceeding with their long-awaited post-panamax orders.
Seaspan may order 10,000TEU or bigger vessels in China's Yangzijiang Shipbuilding by the end of the year, if charter deals and export credit are secured.
Yang Ming's board of directors recently approved the management's up to 10 14,000TEU newbuilding and leaseback project.
CSAV is also preparing to order 9,000TEU newbuildings in Asia, industry players say.
