[Ship Building] Eco MR "Verified"

Eco MR "Verified"

New York-listed shipowner Scorpio Tankers ends growing skepticism on Eco-design newbuildings with evidence of the efficiency of eco ships.

Scorpio revealed that its newbuilding MR eco-design product carrier, delivered from Hyundai Mipo Dockyard of Korea this year, is 30% more efficient when laden than its four-year-old vessel.

According to its 2012 Q3 financial results announced on October 29, Scorpio's 52,000-dwt STI Amber (built 2012) burned 9 metric tons less per day than the STI Coral (built 2008) when travelling laden at 13.5 knots.

STI Amber consumes 20.5 tons per day, which is 30.5% less than the STI Coral (29.5 tons). Under ballast conditions, STI Amber recorded 28% reduced daily fuel consumption.

Emanuele Lauro, chief executive officer, commented, "First five newbuildings are performing as we expected on their voyages" and emphasized that the figures provides evidence of the material savings and environmental benefits of newbuildings."

Scorpio has been delivered five of newbuildings - STI Amber, STI Topaz, STI Ruby, STI Garnet and STI Onyx - from Hyundai Mipo this year and is expecting additional five newbuildings.

In August 2012, the company contracted with the same shipyard to construct two newbuildings vessels for approximately $34m each, including an option for two additional vessels.
