Hyundai Mipo Dockyard of Korea announced today that it has signed a newbuilding contract to build one 35,000-cbm LPG carrier with JX Shipping of Japan.
The LPG carrier, 174m in length, 28m in breadth and 18m in height, costs around $49m with delivery due in July 2014.
The eco-design vessel, equipped with high-efficient engine, will save fuel consumption comparing with existing ships.
JX Shipping, a shipping business subsidiary of JX Nippon Oil and Energy, has decided to place an order at overseas shipyard for the first time.
An official from Hyundai Mipo said "Due to a spike in oil prices, demand for eco-design vessels to replace older ships is expected to grow" and added "We will lead the green ship market with our high technology and previous experiences."
Meanwhile, Hyundai Mipo has contracted a total of 41 vessels reaching around $1.9bn so far this year.
