India's GAIL is looking into possibilities where it orders up to eight new LNG carriers in Far Eastern shipyards.
Korean and Japanese yards are reportedly the most likely candidates for the newbuilding project.
Representatives from GAIL have already visited the Asian shipyards in preparation for issuing an LNG carrier newbuilding tender.
The company sealed an agreement with US LNG producer Cheniere Energy Partners to buy 3.5 million tonnes per annum (mtpa) on a free-on-board (FOB) basis from the Sabine Pass project on the US Gulf Coast.
LNG deliveries from the planned facility are due to start in 2017.
