[Marine] Taiwanese accelerate newbuilding

Taiwanese accelerate newbuilding

Taiwanese owners, including Wisdom Marine Lines, Shih Wei Navigation, Sincere Navigation, U-Ming Marine Transport, etc., plan to concentrate ever more to ship purchase.

Wisdom Marine and Shih Wei ordered four bulkers each at Japanese shipyards this year, while U-Ming invested in bulkers - a pair of 186,000-dwt, two 83,000-dwt and one 98,000-dwt - and Sincere purchased 81,600-dwt bulker pair.

Wisdom Marine Chairman Lan Junsheng said shipbuilding market had reached near the bottom recently and fuel efficiency will lead the newbuilding race. And he added Wisdom would continue to order newbuildings, but long-term employment should be based.

Meanwhile, Taiwanese shipowners have been buying low risk vessels up to recently and during 2002-2007, when shipping market was flourishing, they saved considerable amount of funds without ordering newbuildings or purchasing ships.
