Korea's Daewoo Shipbuilding & Marine Engineering, which ranks World's No.1 in LNG carrier construction track record by delivering 82 newbuildings, has won an order for energy-efficient eco-friendly new-concept LNG carriers equipped with LNG engine.
DSME and Canada's Teekay held a contract signing ceremony in Canada on December 12, to build two firm plus three optional 173,000CBM LNG carriers.
Newbuilding prices were not disclosed. All of the newbuildings are scheduled for delivery by mid-2016.
The newbuildings, 291.4m in length and 46.4m in breadth, will be constructed with MAN-developed M-type, Electronically Controlled, Gas Injection (MEGI) twin engines and Daewoo's self-developed high-pressure fuel injection system, HiVAR.
Therefore, these are expected to be significantly more fuel-efficient and have lower emission levels than other engines, such as dual fuel diesel electric engines, etc., currently being utilized in LNG shipping.
Meanwhile, on December 5, Daewoo's subsidiary providing total ship engineering and resourcing, DSEC had signed a contract to supply design and equipment package for five containerships, installed with MEGIs, with NASSCO of the US,
As LNG carriers with MEGI are expected to lead future LNG shipping market, Daewoo's consecutive orders for shipbuilding and supplying ME-GI installed ships are a remarkable accomplishments.
