Daewoo ramps up offshore

Daewoo Shipbuilding & Marine Engineering has made its Okpo yard more of an offshore-centered one and started to build up related production facilities, amid increasing contracts for offshore plant with offshore projects becoming bigger.

According to Daewoo, the yard has completed firming up the ground of 13,000 square-meter yard and constructed additional 5,600 square-meter offshore equipment storage lot in order to build two ultra-large offshore plants more efficiently, now under construction.

Also, the on-land dock is capable of manufacturing large-size block and has completed dredging by deepening 5 meters for the drillship quay wall.

Expansion work would help gaining upper hand in a tender for offshore plant, which is getting bigger, as well as meeting schedules of growing number of offshore orders.

One official from Daewoo said, "Daewoo contracted offshore orders worth $6.3bn last year, 45% of overall revenue in the year. Considering expanding offshore market, we would be able to secure about 70% of overall orders from offshore plant, in value terms."

Hyundai inks 82K VLGC

Hyundai Heavy Industries has booked an 82,000-cbm very large gas carrier (VLGC) for delivery at the end of 2013 from SK Shipping.

The South Korean shipbuilder has upped its tally of VLGCon order to three from the Korean shipping company, among which the earlier newbuildings were contracted separately in November 2010 and March 2011, both to be delivered in the first half of next year, according to a source close to the company.

The source says all three ships will be chartered-out to SK Shipping's sister company SK Gas on a long-term basis.

The contract value of the latest vessel has been unrevealed, he just saying that the deal was "done at a market level," which cost around mid-$70m, told by newbuilding brokers.

One suggests the deal for the third ship is an option priced at $75m that is now being declared.

Wartsila extends Hyundai license

Wärtsilä, the marine industry's leading solutions provider, and its South Korean partner Hyundai Heavy Industries, Engine and Machinery Division, have signed a ten year extension to their license agreement to build Wärtsilä low-speed engines.

The agreement was signed at a ceremony held on 28 February 2012 in Ulsan and covers the period from 2012 to 2021.

Hyundai Heavy Industries (HHI), a part of the biggest shipbuilding cluster in the world, has through its Engine and Machinery Division been a licensee of Wärtsilä since 1975.

During these 37 years, the total power volume of the Wärtsilä licensed engines built by HHI exceeds 22,800 MW. Under the terms of the newly signed agreement, HHI is licensed to manufacture and sell the full range of Wärtsilä RTA, RT-flex, and X-series low-speed marine diesel engines within its specified territory.

"We are pleased to renew our license agreement with HHI, which is the world's largest marine engine builder and our long-standing business partner in South Korea. With the renewed agreement we have a strong platform for intensifying our fruitful co-operation, and promoting our products to the future generation of ocean-going merchant ships," says Mr Martin Wernli, President, Wärtsilä Switzerland and Vice President, Product Centre 2-stroke.

"At HHI we are happy to sign the renewal of the license agreement and see the smooth continuation of the long-standing business relationship and fruitful co-operation between the two companies. During recent years, Wärtsilä and HHI have expanded their co-operation which, I am convinced, will generate mutual strengths in the coming years," says Mr JH Kim, Sr. Executive Vice President and Chief Operating Officer of HHI Engine and Machinery Division.

Samsung inks drillship-LNGC double

John Fredriksen has splashed out potential $2.2bn in newbuilding orders at Samsung Heavy Industries for LNGC and drillship.

Seadrill, the shipping magnate's offshore drilling company, has ordered two deepwater drillships at the South Korean shipbuilder worth below $600m each.

The two drillships are due delivery in the second and third quarter 2014. The order includes an option for a third drillship also for handover in 2014.

Moreover, Seadrill says it is now in discussions with “several shipyards” to further increase its rig availability in 2014 and thereafter.

Meanwhile, Golar LNG has ordered a further two 160,000cbm LNG carriers at Samsung for $400m, or $200m each.

The first of the carriers is scheduled for delivery in the second quarter of 2014 and the second sometime in early 2015.

Golar LNG said that, subject to declaration deadlines, each contract also comes with an option for a further carrier for 2015 delivery.

Attached to both options is the right to select an FSRU alternative and the vessel contracted for delivery in early 2015 also comes with the option for construction as an FSRU.

Fredriksen said the new orders at Samsung give Golar LNG a total of 13 newbuilings and a further four options.

Maersk sees red ink again

Maersk Line faces a long way back to profit with another loss forecast for 2012 after sinking into the red last year as freight rates collapsed and fuel prices soared.

Parent company AP Moller-Maersk is calling for more industry consolidation to stabilise the volatile and fragmented liner trades.

Full-year figures for the shipping and energy group dropped sharply as its box division, comprising Maersk Line, Safmarine, MCC and Seago Line and total fleet capacity of 2.5m teu, saw a rapid reversal of its financial position.

Losses from container activities soared to $602m after tax in 2011, in contrast to a $2.6bn profit in 2010. The situation worsened quarter by quarter, from a profit of $438m in the first three months of 2011, to a loss of $633m in the October-December period.

The losses, which reflect a price war throughout much of 2011, left parent AP Moller-Maersk with a 33% drop in group profits to $3.4bn from $5bn in 2010.

Looking ahead, the Danish conglomerate said it expected group results to be even lower this year, with its liner business likely to produce another negative figure because of excess capacity.
