[Marine] Frontline eyes newbuild boxships

[Marine] Frontline eyes newbuild boxships

Frontline 2012 is close to expanding its tonnages with newbuilding boxships.

John Fredriksen’s new consolidation vehicle said, "We currently see newbuilding prices in several markets at historically low levels. This creates an attractive risk / reward balance and interesting opportunities."

And added, “Frontline 2012 is currently in discussions regarding a further increase of the newbuilding programme and will continue to pursue its target to create the global leading commodity shipping company.”

According to analyst Erik Nikolai Stavseth of Arctic Securities, “There might be a further expansion into other segments going forward as yard prices for other assets than those mentioned above (such as container vessels) also have come down considerably.”

[Marine] Zim not ready for newbuilds

[Marine] Zim not ready for newbuilds

Israel's Zim is still in the red ink and is expected to delay newbuildings further.

The Haifa-headquartered line reported a smaller deficit in the second quarter of this year as cargo volumes and freight rates increased. A net loss of $47m was posted, against $163m in the opening three months.

But the line is in no rush to take deliveries of newbuildings.

Zim has now 13 mega boxships on order, of which nine 12,600TEU ships are booked at Samsung Heavy Industries and four 10,000TEU's at Hyundai Heavy Industries.

Deliveries of these vessels are said to have been postponed already and is forecast to be put off further.

[Marine] Awilco waits more

[Marine] Awilco waits more

Awilco LNG has been tipped wait for stronger contracts for its newbuildings.

Anders Wilhelmsen-backed Awilco is expected to hold out on fixing its two vessels under construction at Daewoo Shipbuilding & Marine Engineering, with delivery due in 2013.

According to DNB Markets, “The backwardation of the LNG carrier segment is still strong," added, "We believe Awilco LNG will hold out as long as they need to secure attractive rates – hence we argue this will be a waiting game the next six months.”

Meanwhile, John Fredriksen's Golar said it was holding out for stronger contracts on its 11 LNG carrier newbuildings.
