[Equipment] AlfaNova, New LPG cargo heater

[Equipment] AlfaNova, New LPG cargo heater

Alfa Laval announces the launch of its gasket-free, 100% stainless steel AlfaNova M HP 400 plate heat exchanger for use as cargo condenser and/or heater aboard liquid petroleum gas (LPG) carriers.

A compact, lightweight alternative to traditional shell-and-tube heat exchangers, the AlfaNova M HP 400 assists the ship owner in meeting the requirements of the Chemical Distribution Institute’s “Ship Inspection Report for Chemical and Gas Tankers,” seventh edition.

It also provides ship owners with the benefits of higher efficiency, increased safety, greater temperature flexibility, and lower total cost of ownership.

With the introduction of the AlfaNova M HP 400 to the maritime industry, Alfa Laval now provides the LPG market with the option of using this cost-effective cargo condenser as an indirect system instead of using shell-and-tube or welded-type condensers.

“We have adapted the proven fusion-bonded AlfaNova heat exchangers to the cargo conditioning requirements of LPGs,” says Johan Lennartsson, Alfa Laval Marine & Diesel’s regional marketing manager who is responsible for working with contractors and shipyards for liquid gas carriers.

“By combining an innovative 100% stainless steel brazing filler and patented fusion technology, AlfaFusionTM, in a compact heat exchanger, we are able to provide an ideal cargo condenser for indirect LPG reliquefaction systems. The AlfaNova M HP 400 has the same low weight and high efficiency as a copper brazed plate heat exchanger but is suitable for all LPG media including ammonia.”

[Equipment] Wartsila wins HMD deal

[Equipment] Wartsila wins HMD deal

Wärtsilä Hamworthy has won a contract with Hyundai Mipo Dockyard in Korea to supply cargo handling equipment and engineering to four medium size carriers for Antwerp–headquartered Exmar Shipping SA.

Each of the 38,000 m³ capacity vessels will be delivered from the first quarter of 2014 onwards. All will feature Hyundai Mipo’s newly developed design which has seen capacity increased by 3,000 m³ to strengthen competitiveness in the international marketplace.

The new design includes an improved hull shape to minimise resistance in water and optimise fuel consumption. The engine room and deck will be designed so that it can use LNG or LPG as fuel to reduce CO2, SOx and NOx air emissions.

Wärtsilä Hamworthy’s scope of supply will include cargo related engineering including deck tank engineering, reliquefaction plant, Wärtsilä Moss inert gas generator, Wärtsilä Svanehøj cargo pumps, cargo heater and vaporiser, cargo control system, supervision and commissioning. All equipment and engineering services will be delivered in 2013.

Exmar said the addition of the vessels into its fleet will strengthen the company's existing midsize LPG sector as these vessels can transport both ammonia and LPG. The contract will bring to 13 the number of gas carriers in the Exmar LPG fleet to feature Wärtsilä Hamworthy cargo handling engineering and equipment.

[Marine] Eco-Ship "Optimal Choice"

Fuel-efficient eco-friendly vessel is an optimal choice during recent days with high oil price and existing older tonnages will be replaced.

Analyst Park Mu-Hyun of E*Trade Securities in Korea said high oil price has an effect on commercial ship market as well as offshore drilling/production segment and added "demand for fuel-efficient ship has started to grow."

He said "Amid weak shipping market and high oil prices, global leading shipping companies have started to develop an optimized new design and place orders at Korean shipyards, since 2011."

He explained recently profit gap between Maersk, which has already begun investment in eco-friendly vessels since ten years ago, and domestic shipyards grows bigger recently.

Park forecasted "In general, high oil prices will be locked up for a while. Therefore, Eco ships will eventually replace all older tonnages."
