[Marine] MLP Floated at NASSCO

MLP Floated at NASSCO

SAN DIEGO, Nov. 13, 2012 - General Dynamics NASSCO completed the complex float out operation for the first Mobile Landing Platform (MLP) ship, USNS Montford Point.

Construction of the USNS Montford Point is progressing ahead of schedule, with the ship currently at 91 percent complete. The ship will now undergo final outfitting and testing pier side before completing sea trials.

USNS Montford Point is scheduled to be christened in March 2013 and delivered to the U.S. Navy in May 2013. Fabrication of the second MLP, the USNS John Glenn, began in April 2012. Following a keel laying ceremony in December, this second MLP ship will be erected in the same building dock as the USNS Montford Point.

The MLP is a new class and type of auxiliary support ship, as part of the U.S. Navy's Maritime Prepositioning Force of the Future (MPF-F) program. The ship will serve as a transfer station or floating pier at sea, improving the U.S. military's ability to deliver equipment and cargo from ship to shore when land bases do not exist.

It will provide capability for large scale logistics movements such as the transfer of vehicles and equipment from sea to shore.

KOTRA holds Offshore plaza

Korea Trade-Investment Promotion Agency (KOTRA) and Busan, etc., held 'Global Offshore Business Plaza 2012' on November 14 at BEXCO, with an aim to enhance competitiveness of Korean offshore-plant equipment industry and increase opportunities of overseas expansion.

30 major offshore plant equipment makers and related players, including NPCC, Hertel Offshore VostokRaffles, etc., from 10 countries had business talks with 80-some domestic buyers for technical cooperation and purchase of equipment, component and facility.

Particularly, National Petroleum construction Company and the other five companies contracted for UAE UZ750 project participated the plaza and talked business regarding sourcing equipment and component, etc.

Russian state-owned consolidated shipyard and vendors plan to find technical cooperation for Kara Sea offshore oil development platform project as well as equipment outsourcing companies.

An official from KOTRA said "Offshore plant industry will be a breakthrough for stagnant Korean shipbuilding industries with expansion of global offshore field development" and added "We will proceed technical tie-up businesses for domestic equipment makers with overseas major facility fabricators and boost domestic industries."

Sampson conversion recently completed

Viktor Lenac has recently completed a major conversion contract involving the Heavy Lift Construction vessel Samson, owned by CVI Global Lux Oil and Gas 4 S.A.R.L., which has had a pipe-laying capability installed.

Sampson has been converted from an offshore gas and oil field installation vessel, built in 2010, 180 m long and 32 m wide, carrying a crane of 1.600 ton capacity, into a crane and pipelay vessel.

This is one more conversion on Viktor Lenac’s respectable reference list of complex projects in conversion and offshore among which Helix Producer I, Seminole, Kommandor 3000 and others, establishing its position as one of the few specialized shipyards for ship conversions and gas platform construction in the entire region of the Mediterranean.

The Aft cargo holds have been converted into two Engine rooms with 3 Gensets each, and Fresh water tanks have been converted into two Thruster rooms with Retractable Azimuth Thrusters. The Forward cargo hold has been converted into an A&R winch room.

The Void space has been converted into a Drive room with Variable Frequency Drive units, Transformers and other electrical equipment.

Three 125 tonne capacity Tensioners, two 100 tonne Track supports, two 60 tonne Tracks supports and other Remacut pipelay equipment have been installed.

A new pipelay enclosure was fabricated, installed and outfitted, and 700 m of Monorails and rails for Welding Trolleys was installed.

An A-Frame as well as 50 m long stinger and associated equipment was fabricated, installed and outfitted.

New built-in steel (without Stinger) totalled 1,300 t.

Caley selected for Offshore Wind

Offshore handling systems specialist, Caley Ocean Systems, has been awarded a contract to supply leading dredging and marine engineering company, Jan de Nul NV, with a 5,400Te capacity cable turntable for the MPV Willem De Vlamingh.

Mid 2013, Jan de Nul is installing 245kV export cable connecting the Northwind Offshore Wind power plant, on the Lodewijkbank off the coast of Oostende, to the Belgian power grid. In the first quarter of 2013, the MPV Willem De Vlamingh is being outfitted for cable laying offshore. Caley is undertaking all vessel modification design work and construction of the 28m diameter turntable on deck.

In addition to the 5,400Te storage capacity turntable, Caley is supplying a modular loading tower assembly comprising loading arm, inboard chute, tensioner and control cabin. To ensure smooth loading and deployment of the cable offshore, the Caley turntable includes an integral 5Te tensioner and 10Te deck tensioner.

“Caley Ocean Systems has the experience in the design and manufacture of large turntables needed to ensure timely delivery of the cable lay installation,” said Frederik Deroo, senior manager Vessel Construction, Jan de Nul NV.

NK inks rig core equipment

Korea's NK has inked an order for Air Pressure Vessel (APV), which is a core equipment of Riser Tensioner System (Maritime Hydraulics Riser Tensioner System for drillship, in earlier this month.

The contract values around $10m, with delivery slated for the beginning of 2013.

Also, NK revealed that options, with delivery for the second half of 2013 and 2014, are under discussion.

In July, 2011, NK has signed a long-term supply contract with major overseas Riser Tenseioner System manufacturers and completed deliveries of APVs totalling about $10bn.

On-time delivery, quality management and high reliability on products seem to have led to another firm contract.

Moreover, NK said it has passed stringent inspection and verification for its quality management and production management systems by several overseas offshore facility companies and received a satisfactory ratings.

Ice-class Cruiseships await signing

US cruise player SunStone Ships is reportedly planning to order a pair of ice-class expedition cruiseships at European shipyard shortly.

The newbuilding price is said to be around $100m per vessel and the contract is likely to include options to build more such vessels.

SunStone CEO Niels-Erik Lund revealed the company has finalized negotiations and specifications with a shipyard in Europe.

The expedition cruiseships would each have capacity for around 200 passengers.

Norden orders Eco kamsarmax

With abundant cash reserved, Norden placed an order for ice-class fuel-efficient bulker at Japanese shipyard.

Also, it seems that Norden plans to invest in further new vessels with a plenty of cash funded by selling second hand vessels.

Norden has not revealed the shipyard involved and the newbuilding price, but the kamsarmax has been signed for five-year charter contract.

Carsten Mortensen, CEO of Norden, said the company needs to add more vessels, eco-friendly vessels in particular, as it is looking into focusing on bulker segment from tankers.

According to Mr. Mortensen, Norden has $393m in cash and securities, $185m undrawn on existing credit lines and has generated $100m from the sale of seven bulkers in recent months.

And he added “We can buy a lot of ships," but "We have no great hurry to rush into anything right now."

BV classes World's Largest Boxship

Leading international classification society Bureau Veritas has classed what is currently the largest containership in the world.

Built by DSME (Daewoo Shipbuilding and Marine Engineering) in Korea for French operator CMA-CGM, CMA CGM Marco Polo is the first in a series of three 16,000 teu vessels which will each be named after great explorers.

The CGM Marco Polo - 396 metres long and 54 metres wide with a draft of 16 metres - is equipped with the latest cutting-edge environmental technology. It has an electronically controlled engine allowing for significantly reduced consumption of fuel (-3 per cent, on average) and of lub oil (-25 per cent). A twisted leading edge rudder improves the hydrodynamics of the vessel by optimising water flow and significantly reducing energy expenditure as well as CO2 emissions.

A pre-swirl stator facilitates the alignment of water flow upstream from the propeller in order to improve productivity. These innovative features make it possible to reduce by between two and four per cent the consumption of energy and atmospheric emissions.

The CGM Marco Polo also features an exhaust gas bypass system which improves its energy efficiency, reducing fuel consumption by 1.5 per cent at low speeds. An optimised hull design also results in significantly improved propulsion through the water, while a ballast water treatment system preserves environmental biodiversity by preventing the release of chemicals into the sea.

BV has carried out extensive calculations of the dynamic structural response of the vessel at sea, taking into account whipping and springing, resulting in the granting of its WhiSP2 notation.

Delivery of the other two vessels in the series is expected in 2013.
